Liquid Photography

This was another challenge put before me ‘Liquids’
Well Wikipedia states
“Liquid is one of the four primary states of matter, with the others being solid, gas and plasma. A liquid is a fluid. Unlike a solid, the molecules in a liquid have a much greater freedom to move. The forces that bind the molecules together in a solid are only temporary in a liquid, allowing a liquid to flow while a solid remains rigid.”
Well that definition did not tell me much as to how I was to interpret this into a photographic challenge.
So the images below are some of my working files. A few of these were not submitted, but you can see where I was coming from.

Often what we say or what we mean is totally taken out of context. However, to interpret this into photography had me scratching my head initially and proposed a challenge for me. How could I create something a little different, yet keep it interesting. The creative element is normally not too difficult but a straight out photograph was another matter.

This is a follow up from my previous post.

The slideshow was created to give to Pearl to keep for her memoirs.  I pray her hair will grow as she will and this will be just a memory to keep close to her heart.  It must be so hard for a child to deal with alopecia.
Since having uploaded the show to vimeo, a few corrections have been made and subtle changes.  For now, just enjoy.

Pearl the Beautiful

Christmas came early for Pearl.

This is how the story started. It was only a few weeks ago when an I received an email from a mother who has a 10 year old daughter ‘Pearl’, who since grade 3 started to lose her hair.  She now suffers totally with Alopecia.
All Fran wanted was to find someone that could paint her head and find a photographer to take a couple of portrait images to be printed for the wall and to make Pearl feel beautiful.  My decision was immediate and volunteered my photographic services, as did my very first enquiry to Nikki The Clown (http://www.nikkitheclown.com/) to be the artist. Of course, we would all be delighted to be part of making Pearl’s special pre-Christmas surprise. View full post »

Maybe it is time that we call ourselves ‘Image Creators’ rather than just a photographer.  There are millions of photographers in this world, but is it not time that we try to set ourselves a little apart?  Take our work to the next level (oh I hate that phrase).  In reality, this is what we need to do, to enhance our images with more creativity, thinking, but never losing our spontaneity of a special moment.  Just like this image.  The soft baby blue sky caught my eye.  The whiteness of the Australian Gums and that special soft light and colours that you find in the outback of Australia.
Here I toyed with intentional camera movement, which takes a little practice.  Exif data if I recall was 24-105mm F4 lens:  F22 @98mm Focal Length, ISO100, 1/13sec.

There many versions of this particular scene, many more blurred and creative in their own right.  But this one spoke to me more.  I can still hear the sounds of the chatter of the birds by the creek side, feel the winter warmth and sense the isolation of this lovely little spot. The location was just 120 kms from Cairns in Tropical North Queensland.  Once you headed west over the rainforest clad mountain ranges, passing through rich farmland and then continued west towards Dimbulah.  You really started to have the sense of exploration heading towards our outback country.

Just out of Dimbulah - in the Hinterland of Cairns

Yours truly here has had the most thrilling news yesterday.
It was only a few weeks ago that I thought to myself, why not enter this competition.  OK, landscape photography is not really my genre and still needs to be developed.  What could I possibly lose?  Nothing!

Well to my surprise there were four wonderful notifications in my Inbox congratulating me on my Bronze Awards in the Epson International Pano 2013 Competition.
What pleased me more was that one of my very minimal landscapes was even considered. Just goes to show you that you do not have to go overboard to be recognised.

This has certainly given me the push to pick up that camera of mine again and challenge myself once again.
As a photographer you can relate to the fact that we all hit the doldrums with our creativity at times.  And out of the blue it does not take much to suddenly ignite that little spark telling you….yes you can do it and hopefully with fresh ideas you are right back in the groove.

It was never important to me whether my photographs were ok to other people.  My idea was just to enjoy my passion and be pleased when my concept of a certain photograph came to fruition.  It is a personal journey that gives me that little skip and keeps my inner child happy.
Venturing into the International Salon was a first, so what will the future hold?  Who knows.

For now it certainly has put a smile on my face and a little hope that my journey is not finished yet.

My only regret is that my father was not here to witness that I finally grew to love photography.  He had his own Photography Business and was passionate in his work.  As a child I was never interested and once he passed away when I was 9 years of age, photography was never in my life until the first Digital SLR landed in my hand.  The rest is history.
